Summer Sauv
Cowhorn & Upper Five partner to produce Loire-style white under cooperative label.
Coming soon to an ice bucket near you is our first-ever Sauvignon Blanc, a delicious, crisp white akin to a Sancerre from France's Loire Valley. We are releasing just 144 cases, mostly around the State of Jefferson and a bit beyond to fill a few Bay Area requests. Upper Five is the Rogue Wine Country's only other certified organic vineyard making them a perfect partner for Cowhorn. Located at an elevation of 1,920 feet, Terry Sullivan grew these delicious grapes on the rolling slopes above Talent, Oregon. We put them through the same natural fermentation process at our Applegate Valley winery as our Biodynamic® estate wines. The launch of this new label marks the first time that Cowhorn has purchased grapes or produced wine outside of our signature Rhône-style. We hope that history remembers the fruits of our labor as much for the partnership as the final product. We were pleasantly surprised. If only we had produced more...

92-points Plush Sunset and Wine Enthusiast discover our first Reserve Syrah.
We just received word that our 2008 Reserve Syrah, our first reserve, was awarded 92 points by the editors at Wine Enthusiast. We also just learned that it has been nominated for the Sunset Western Wine Awards. Needless to say, there was much "Woohoo-ing" from our team. Laurie Daniel at the San Jose Mercury News tasted the 2008 Reserve Syrah at Hospice du Rhône in Paso Robles, and returned home to tell her readers that it "is plump and lively with flavors of blackberry, blueberry, a note of roasted coffee and firm structure." We made this first reserve in the Old World tradition. First, we selected our six best barrels for blending. Then, we let them age together for an additional six month before bottling. The result is a red that is definitely darker and more plush than our past Syrahs, while still holding its own as a soft, smooth palate pleaser. There are less than 100 left.

Rebootled Cowhorn gives your used wine bottles a second lease on life.
In our ongoing quest to close the loop on as many aspects of our farm and winery as possible, Cowhorn is happy to introduce a new upcycling partner located right here in the green state of Oregon. Rebootle creates one of a kind, handmade, casual glassware for the eco-conscious consumer that is functional, beautiful, and dishwasher safe.
Located in Forest Grove, Rebootle aims to make a big difference on the carbon footprint of the Oregon wine business by giving landfill-bound bottles a second lease on life. With the help of Salem-based Agri-Plas, we recently shipped our first 5,000 bottles to Rebootle, and would like to say a special thank you to our friends at Wine Bottle Renew in Lodi, California for the inspiration to keep collecting bottles and the Applegate Lodge for bringing back such a huge haul.
We hear that our first shipment of used bottles is actually being transformed into glass tiles for a new building in Portland. Remember to bring your used Cowhorn bottles back when you visit the estate.

Club COWHORN
Four wines twice a year direct to your door
We streamlined Club COWHORN to give you more value, and ship wines during the optimum times between the Rogue Wine Country's hard winters and hot summers.
Club members get first dibs on new releases, last-chance notices before sell-outs, and 15 percent off on all additional purchases. A case here and a case there, and it starts to add up.
To keep it simple, we'll bill once annually, send just one renewal reminder, and ship in May and November, generally milder months that make for safer transit temperatures.
To make the wine club a win/win, 2011 members receive eight wines at $242 plus shipping, securing you savings and first access to limited-production new releases. We get the security and pleasure of personally knowing as many of our customers as possible.

Fave Rosé
Callahans Lodge to serve sold-out Rosé for first pairing at Local Favorites Winemaker's Dinner.
Many thanks to Casey and the culinary crew over at Callahan's Mountain Lodge for including our now sold-out 2009 Rosé in their upcoming Local Favorites Winemaker's Dinner on Friday, June 3rd at 6:30 pm.
Casey gave us a sneak peak at their mouth-watering menu that includes duck salad, roasted quail and lavender cheddar torts. The Cowhorn course will feature fresh AA-grade tuna tartare cubed and flavored with lemon, lime and horseradish zest, and served on a microgreen salad tossed in a rose hip walnut oil vinaigrette...a match made in Heaven.
The Cowhorn wine dinner at Callahan's last year was one of the best, and we can confirm that they are serving some of the last known bottles of our most recent Rosé.
Wine writer Paul Gregutt recently reported in the Seattle Times that Cowhorn was his "favorite" Oregon Rosé. He went on to write, "The wine was fresh, tart and intense, with racy fruit flavors of cranberry and wild cherry, hints of orange liqueur, and a dusting of cinnamon spice. It developed intriguing grace notes while holding up beautifully over the course of a long evening."
Our next Rosé release isn't until 2012, so savor each sip. This five course feast is only $65 per person including gratuity, and reservations are required. To save your seats, call Callahan's on 541.482.1299. Stay in the lodge and receive 20% off their regular rates including tax and breakfast. Sounds like a wonderful one-night staycation!

Asparagus season
It's Asparagus Season here in the Applegate Valley, when the sweetest sprigs in the Rogue break ground in their 2-acre patch between the forest and our vineyard. With over 15,000 plants, of the Purple Passion and Jersey Knight varieties, we expect to pick about 125,000 spears this year weighing in at around 8,000 pounds. Rogue locals will find Cowhorn Asparagus available at the Ashland Co-op, Shop 'n Kart, and on the menu at New Sammy's Cowboy Bistro.
| Win a night on the town
Love musing on your favorite wines? We do too. Discover your inner wine writer and win a night at the Ashland Springs Hotel in a contest designed to give us a taste of your translation of our Biodynamic Rhône-style wines. Try your pen at writing the poetic prose of a carefully crafted paragraph describing one, or all, of our current releases. Multiple musings will improve your odds of winning this wonderful one-night getaway for two.
| Barrels of fun for sale
From bistro tables to bird houses, used wine barrels offer a super stylish way to reduce, reuse and recycle. This year, we expect to have about to 30 barrels available for purchase for $35 each, or two for $50. Such a deal! Barrels are available on a first come, first serve basis. So if you know you want one (or two), please be sure to say so when you make your appointment for a tasting and tour of the estate. And if you’re inspired to send us photos of your barrel’s new life as an ice chest or a dog house, we’d love to see them. |
