Estate Vineyard News While spring has long been regarded as a time of rebirth and renewal, it is especially true in the vineyard. Spring signals the beginning of the grapevine’s annual cycle which begins with the onset of bud break. Bud break occurs when the shoots, this year’s fruiting cane, began to grow after they receive adequate heat in the spring, usually occurring when average daily temperature reaches about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Bud break typically occurs around mid-April and can happen as late as May 1st in the Willamette Valley. Dustin Miller, Vineyard manager of our Estate Vineyard, was excited to witness some good swelling and bulging around April 18th but it wasn’t until the last week of April that we witnessed actual bud break. Although slightly later than past vintages, Dustin and winemaker David Grooters are convinced that we will reach optimal ripeness at the end of the growing season thanks to our moderate elevation between 200-475 feet and ancient, marine sedimentary soils which drain quickly, causing vines to stop vegetative growth and focus on berry development earlier in the season. Reserve your place for the Estate Vineyard Lunch The next major stage in the vineyard is Bloom. Join us to celebrate that milestone at our first Estate Vineyard Lunch Tour, Saturday, June 18, 12–3 PM. > Read all about it right here.
