Carlton Cellars News
In this newsletter — June News & Events:
Join us June 18 for a Gourmet Vineyard-Warming Lunch Help Robin & Dave celebrate their move onto the Estate Vineyard When Dave and Robin first laid eyes on what is now the site of their Estate Vineyard in 2001, they knew they had found the place they would someday call home. Dave, winemaker and co-owner of Carlton Cellars, was already familiar with the site since he had helped Ken Wright plant his Abbot Claim Vineyard next door earlier the same year. Since then Savannah Ridge, on which the vineyard sits, has steadily gained a reputation as an extraordinary site to grow Pinot Noir. Dave was particularly drawn to the gently rounded hillside which has a S/SW aspect that captures the afternoon sun. Site variations ranging from elevations of 200 to 475 feet, as well as soil depth and structure, water-holding capacity, drainage, and exposure were all excellent qualities that lead Dave to plant his vineyard here. When they initially purchased the land, it was covered with massive oak and maple trees. Dave and vineyard manager Dustin Miller spent the next two years preparing the site until they were finally ready to plant their first block of Pinot Noir in 2003, opting for the Dijon 777 clone on Riparia Gloire rootstock. Dave is partial to the Dijon clone for its early-ripening tendencies and for the darker, more intense fruit flavors it contributes to the wine. In addition, Riparia has long been known for its high phylloxera resistance and low to moderate vigor. Robin, meanwhile, was drawn to the beautiful, tranquil views, and dreamt about the garden that she would someday plant on these ancient, marine sedimentary soils. While awaiting approval to build on the vineyard, they commuted an hour every day to and from their house in McMinnville to Carlton Cellars. Early last month, they were finally able to make the much-anticipated move into their brand new home perched high on Savannah Ridge with its stunning views of the valley. They are now a stone’s throw from the winery. Over the course of the past few weeks, Robin has been busy turning their house into a home and planting her garden while finally getting to spend quality time with her three goats. In celebration of Robin & Dave’s homecoming and the upcoming summer, we invite you to please join us on Saturday, June 18th for a three-course gourmet lunch prepared by the talented Paul Parenteau as well as the rare opportunity to savor our award-winning wines on their own terroir. > Get the details of the Vineyard Lunch here, including Chef Paul’s menus and how to RSVP. Or simply email us or call 503-852-7888. Last of the Proposal Rock Sauvignon Blanc How fast it has gone! We are down to the last ten cases of our debut 2010 Proposal Rock Yamhill-Carlton Sauvignon Blanc, so this is your last chance to snag it while it’s here! It’s no surprise that this wine has gone so fast. It’s a fantastic Sauv Blanc, and possibly the only one from the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. Youthful aromas of elderflower, peach, green papaya, and lychees set the tone for crisp green apple, kiwi, and white peach on the palate. But only while it lasts! > Get your Proposal Rock from our Purchase page for a friendly $21.60/bottle at the case price of $259.20. Or up to 20% less if you’re a Connoisseurs Club member. Carlton Cellars takes three Double-Golds at 2011 Oregon Wine Awards Double Gold is the "Best of the Best" at the Oregon Wine Awards.
